Which imaginative German first thought of transforming the opening years of school (usually the most terrifying for very small children)into a garden...? It's one of those words that Germans sometimes misspell »Kindergarden« because they fail to realize that the English language borrowed the term form German without making any modifications to it.
Kindergarten is one of very few German words that are used in English. Others are Angst and Blitzkrieg.
