Birth

In consideration of the day and hour of my birth, it was declared by the nurse, and by some sage women in the neighbourhood who had taken a lively interest in me several months before there was any possibility of our becoming personally acquainted, first, that I was destined to be unlucky in life; and secondly, that I was privileged to see ghosts and spirits; both these gifts inevitably attaching, as they believed, to all unlucky infants of either gender, born towards the small hours on a Friday night.

Castor and Pollux were born from an egg.

Pallas came out of a skull.

Galatea was once a block of stone.

Peresilis, in the 10th century, said that he arose from the ground where a priest had spilled holy water.

Arimaxus, from a fissure in the earth caused by a bolt of lightning.

Leucomedom was the son of a cavern on Mt Etna.

I myself have seen a man come out of a wine cellar.

It was a large room. Full of people.All kinds.And they had all arrived at the same buildingat more or less the same time.And they were all free.And they were all asking themselvesthe same question:What is behind that curtain?You were born. And so you're free.So happy birthday. (laurie anderson)
