Without any underlying axioms the whole construction is at risk. Yet there is nothing attractive about the prospect of slaving away to build something that will always remain buried beneath the surface.
The Foundation Trilogy by Isaac Asimov is still one of my favourite science fiction readings.
Douglas Adams seems to have read it, too.
The foundation is broad and well-seated, immovable and with small shrubs planted around it.
