In addition to providing the definition of a word, most dictionaries supply information on its usage.
The question to consider when purchasing a dictionary is whether you will find more useful a dictionary that indicates how a word is used or a dictionary that indicates how a word should be used.
In other words, do you want a descriptive dictionary or a prescriptive dictionary?
