The Dadaists chose their name by flinging an icepick at a French dictionary opened to a random page.

The icepick hit 'dada,' meaning hobbyhorse.

»Da-da.«

Since Dada, every artist is in dada (whether they want to be or not).

I think it opened the door for freedom of speech in many ways. It brought about some contradictions though- obviously! The world was not a better place because of it but at least people were aware more so of the complete idiocy of the world. This group of people who in a sense were mirroring this back to society to show everyone ecaxactly that.
