Clues are vital in solving mysteries. They are the facts and items discovered and collected but not yet understood. Once placed in the proper context, however, they will help unravel the intricacies of the crime or problem.
Sometimes in a mystery story, a false clue will lead one in the wrong direction, away from the correct solution. This type of clue is often called a >>red herring<<.
